Solid wood can be sanded and refinished after surface damage. Engineered wood covers a spectrum of products. Plywood is the most structurally sound version and performs reasonably well in furniture frames that do not take direct mechanical stress. MDF and particle board are at the lower end. Both are manufactured from compressed wood fibers or chips bonded with adhesive resin. What they trade for their lower cost is density, screw-holding capacity over time, and moisture resistance.

Why MDF Fails and Where It Matters Most

MDF is a legitimate material for certain limited applications. The back panel of a bookcase, a painted surface that does not take physical stress, decorative millwork in a dry room. Drawer boxes on MDF fail because drawers take repetitive mechanical stress every single day. The screw anchors holding drawer glides, hinges, and handles begin to pull through as the compressed fibers loosen under repeated loading. Kitchens are where MDF fails most consistently, because moisture is a constant factor in that room.

Steam from cooking, spills near the sink and dishwasher, condensation, and daily surface wiping all work on the material over years. MDF swells, loses edge integrity, and the banding that covers exposed edges lifts. This is a timeline question, not an if question.
